State of the Fund – Winter 2024

In our most recent State of the Fund, Kaylee Williams shared our vision for creating accessible pathways into the world of venture capital. This vision came to life through the Heartland Hustle workshop series in the spring, where we aimed to demystify venture capital for entrepreneurs across Iowa.

This fall, we took our mission a step further by piloting a program designed to inspire the next generation of innovators. Partnering with the Waukee APEX facility, we launched Venture Thursdays, an engaging, hands-on curriculum tailored specifically for high school students.

Venture capital education in high school is becoming increasingly prevalent in states like California, New York, and Texas, startup ecosystems are thriving. To keep Iowa’s students competitive, we saw an opportunity to empower young minds with the tools and knowledge to excel in this evolving space.

The Waukee APEX program—a nationally recognized initiative that connects students with real-world professional experiences—was the perfect partner to pilot this effort.

Each session of Venture Thursdays was designed to be both informative and interactive. From presentations and group discussions to hands-on activities, students explored core concepts like what makes a great pitch, the characteristics of successful startups, when to seek investment and the decision-making process of a venture capitalist.

The success of this initiative wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible partnership of the Waukee APEX team and the enthusiasm of the student associates who participated. Their eagerness to learn and engage with complex topics like venture capital reminds us why this work is so important.

InnoVenture Iowa is committed to fostering innovation at every level. As we reflect on the accomplishments of this fall’s Venture Thursdays program, we’re more committed than ever to increase opportunities for Iowa’s young minds to thrive. Investing in education is as vital as investing in startups—it’s an investment in the future of our state and its economy.
